Residents of Ogwedhi Sub-location in Migori County have called on the government to speed up investigations into the killing of a young man whose body was found on Thursday evening at around 9pm.
The deceased, from Suna East, Migori County, was allegedly killed by unknown assailants at the border of Migori and Narok counties. His family says they received information that a person had been killed in the area, prompting them to rush to the scene where they confirmed it was their kin.
According to the family, items recovered at the scene included a mobile phone, a button phone, a panga believed to have been used in the attack, and the deceased’s motorcycle which he used for his daily work.
Jerry’s family said no arrest has been made so far, with the matter currently being handled by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kilgoris due to the location of the incident. The family is now appealing to security agencies to intensify investigations and bring those responsible to justice.
Ogwedhi Sub-location village elder Joshua Odhiambo said residents have experienced similar incidents in the past without clear answers, raising concerns over insecurity in the border region.
“It is true what my brother has said. We live on the border of Kisii, Kuria and the Rift Valley, and some cases that have happened before have never received answers. This one must be investigated so that we know the truth and the cause,” said Odhiambo.
Daniel Okumu, a resident, called on the government to intervene, saying people were living in fear despite having security systems in place.
“We are requesting the government to intervene because we cannot continue living in fear while we are in a country with a government system,” he said.
The chairman of WARISIA, John Odera, urged the county commissioner, DCI and other relevant authorities to work together and ensure justice is served.
“We have lost a very young man who was found by people. We want a joint effort between the county commissioner, DCI and all relevant authorities to give us answers before we decide to demonstrate and take matters into our own hands,” Odera said.
He added that evidence recovered at the scene, including the phones and panga, should help investigators move faster.
Residents have warned that failure to resolve the matter could increase tension in the area as they continue demanding justice for the deceased.
