Electric atmosphere across Migori County filled with excitement, joy, and gratitude has received the third edition of governor Ochillo Ayacko cup being played across all 40 wards.
The tournament has become more than just a football competition to evolve into a powerful platform for youth empowerment, talent development, social cohesion, and community transformation.
Parents, coaches, team managers, players, and community leaders have praised the tournament for creating opportunities that enable young people to showcase their football talent while promoting discipline and positive social values.
Derrick Odhiambo, a player from Gingo Football Club, expressed his gratitude for the initiative.
“This tournament has boosted my confidence and helped me improve my football skills. Many young players now believe that they can pursue football professionally because they have a platform where their talents can be seen,” said Derrick.
His sentiments were echoed by Mike Jack of Mariega FC, who described the competition as a life-changing opportunity for many young people across Migori County.
The positive impact of the tournament is also evident among coaches who interact with the players on a daily basis.
“Our players are very grateful. These matches keep them active and focused. Instead of engaging in negative activities, they spend their time training, improving their skills, and learning teamwork,” Coach Radiega observed.
One of the most significant achievements of the Governor’s Cup has been its role in addressing social challenges affecting young people.
Mary Atieno, a parent from Suna East, highlighted the positive influence of the competition on young people to stay away from crime and other social evils.
“These games are very important because they keep our children busy. They spend their time training and competing instead of engaging in harmful activities. As parents, we are very happy and grateful,” she said.
Beyond football, the Governor’s Cup has promoted unity among different communities.
Despite the overwhelming success of the event, some team managers and players appealed for additional support for teams that participated but did not advance to the later stages of the competition.
Their request reflects the enthusiasm and passion that young people have developed towards the Governor’s Cup. Rather than discouragement, the appeal demonstrates a desire for continuous growth and improvement within the competition.
