For many survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), the journey to healing begins with finding a safe place where they can seek protection, support, and justice. In Migori County, that journey is set to become easier following the commencement of the construction of a modern safe house at Macalder Sub-County Hospital in Nyatike Constituency.

The project, valued at more than KSh20 million, is being implemented through a partnership between
the Migori County Government and Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO). Once completed, the
facility will provide temporary shelter, counseling services, psychosocial support, and referral services to
survivors of gender-based violence from across the county.

For years, survivors in Migori have faced significant challenges in accessing comprehensive support services. Many have been forced to travel long distances or return to unsafe environments due to the lack of dedicated shelters. The new safe house seeks to bridge this gap by creating a secure and supportive environment where survivors can begin rebuilding their lives.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, county leaders emphasized the importance of
protecting vulnerable members of society and ensuring that survivors receive the care and dignity they
deserve. The project reflects the county government’s commitment to strengthening social protection
systems and promoting human rights.

The facility will be strategically located within Macalder Sub-County Hospital, enabling survivors to
access medical care, counseling, and legal support from one location. This integrated approach is
expected to improve service delivery and reduce barriers that often prevent survivors from seeking help.
Beyond providing shelter, the safe house will also serve as a center for empowerment and recovery.

Survivors will be linked to programs aimed at enhancing their economic independence, helping them regain confidence and rebuild their futures. Community awareness initiatives will also be strengthened to address the root causes of gender-based violence and promote prevention efforts.

The partnership between Migori County Government and SHOFCO demonstrates the value of collaboration in addressing complex social challenges. By bringing together resources, expertise, and community networks, the two institutions are creating a sustainable solution that will have a lasting impact on the lives of survivors.

As construction progresses, residents and stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a major milestone in the fight against gender-based violence in the region. Many believe the facility will not only offer protection to survivors but also send a strong message that violence against women, children, and vulnerable persons has no place in society.

The safe house represents more than just a building. It symbolizes hope, dignity, and a renewed commitment to protecting the rights of survivors. For countless individuals who have endured violence and abuse, the facility will provide a chance to heal, recover, and move forward with their lives.

As Migori County continues investing in programs that promote social justice and community wellbeing, the Macalder Safe House stands as a testament to what can be achieved when government, development partners, and communities work together toward a common goal.
