Ndhiwa Member of Parliament Martin Owino and area residents have welcomed national government allocation of Sh85million to set up a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institute in the area.

The new institute will be built at Ochol village and allow access to technical skills for the locals in plumbing, masonry, electrical installation, tile fixing and carpentry among others

The project will be aided by the Ndhiwa constituency office and start off as a constituent college of Mawego National Polytechnic.

Owino said the project will be completed in one year and will take about 800 students in the first batch.

“Residents and community need to support such institutions because they are they are the sources of self-employment. The technical skills youths will acquire will make them be job creators,” Owino said.

He was speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony and was accompanied by the Principal of Mawego National Polytechnic John Abuto.

The two said the project will improve businesses in the area and urged the locals to invest in real estate and other services to boost economic empowerment of the area.

“Residents must be ready to build houses which students will rent. They should also know that diverse business opportunities will come up,” Abuto said.

The Principal urged youths in the area not to focus only on the white-collar jobs but also get alternative jobs.

“Many youths will easily access jobs in affordable housing projects across the country. We need many of such training institutions to curb unemployment amongst the youths,” he said.
