The Public Health officials have certified as safe water sources at St Peter’s Abwao Secondary after last rounds of treatment.
Suna West Sub County Public health officer Vincent Lusula in a certificate of analysis seen by the Star indicated “clear soft water but with very high bacterial load. May be recommended for domestic use after proper disinfection.”
“The issue of chemical intoxication was ruled out, so we established that there was a high bacterial load in the water being used in the school. We have so far treated the water and proven healthy for human use,” he said.
On July 5, the ministry of health launched an investigation into the bizarre skin infection after 39 students were diagnosed with skin rashes.
The school’s principal Jacktone Ogola said they took twater samples to the government chemist for laboratory analysis “but all the tests turned negative. Prior to the drilling of the school borehole, officials from the National Environment Management authority accessed the area and gave us the go ahead.”
“The initial report showed that physically and chemically the water was alright to be used, but the bacteria load was high which we managed to contain, ” he said.
