Migori county governor Zachary Okoth Obado has said Uganda is not a good neighbour following the recent happenings at Migongo Island in Lake Victoria.
Governor Obado for years on end, Kenyans on the disputed Island have faced harassment with impunity from Ugandan officers yet the Island was evidently Kenyan.
The governor said, in his visit to the Island last year, the rocky little land belonged to Kenya as it was larlgely occupied by Kenyan fishermen.
“I have visited Migingo, and for sure all the structures put up there were done by Kenyans. Ugandans have nothing,” Obado quipped.
Obado said it was not right for Kenyans and police officers on the Island to be constantly harassed at the watch of the Jubilee government.
The county boss said Uganda was spoiling for war and had hinted in all ways possible yet the Kenyan security officers were playing a blind eye.
“This is a declaration of war. Museveni is a war monger. This acts of impunity should not be tolerated,” governor Obado said.
He further accused Ugandans of bringing cholera to Migori County through Migingo and urged the government to swiftly end the row to help stop future problems to county residents.
Obado accused the government of laxity in handling the Migingo row. Migingo Island is said to have ten Kenyan security officers against Ugandas thirty five.
However, some of the Kenyan security officers stationed on the Island also blamed the Kenyan government of the current happenings on the Island.
Speaking to the press, a police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said the situation had escalated to the extent of a two police officers being assaulted.
The police officers joined other Kenyans on the disputed Island to declare their stand about the Island so that they don’t rely on rumours that the Island was sold off to Uganda.
On the assault of police officers, Migori county commandant David Kirui said trouble for the officers started when Kenyan Marine patrol officer started harassing residents of Migingo who had gone to buy foodstuff from Muhuru-bay town.
The county boss however warned the Kenyan officials stationed in Ugingo and Migingo to know their boundaries and scope of their works. .
Trouble sprout afresh on the Island when Ugandan officers arrested IEBC officials who had gone to the Island to register voters.
