Migori County Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) to establish a multi-million safe house for survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), marking a major milestone in efforts to protect vulnerable members of society.

The agreement, signed by Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko on June 23, seeks to provide survivors of GBV with a safe, secure, and supportive environment where they can access protection, counseling, and other essential services needed for recovery and reintegration.

The safe house is expected to also offer comprehensive services, including psychosocial support, protection, and care for survivors.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Ayacko said the partnership underscores the county government’s commitment to addressing Gender-Based Violence and ensuring survivors receive the support they need to rebuild their lives with dignity.

“The establishment of this safe house is a significant step towards safeguarding vulnerable members of our community and strengthening the county’s response to Gender-Based Violence,” the governor said.

According to the agreement, once completed the facility will be managed by the County Government by deploying necessary personnel and oversee its day-to-day operations.

In addition to addressing GBV, the partnership will also support education initiatives across the county.

Through the collaboration, needy and deserving students will benefit from bursary support aimed at improving access to quality education and enhancing opportunities for academic achievement.

Ayacko commended SHOFCO for its dedication to empowering communities and improving livelihoods, noting that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to social development and inclusivity.

The collaboration is expected to strengthen social protection services while expanding educational opportunities, contributing to the county’s broader development agenda.

The signing of the MoU comes as Migori County continues to implement initiatives aimed at promoting social welfare, protecting vulnerable groups, and fostering sustainable development across the region.
