Migori county is facing food insecurity after hailstorm destroyed several acres of farms amid heavy downpour reported across the country.

Acres of maize, beans, tobacco and horticulture have been rendered useless with Agriculture executive Valentine Ogongo pointing out that Kakrao, Wiga and Wasimbete wards have been most affected.

Ogongo said the farmers had just left a dry spell and hoped rains was to boost their yields this season.

“We had just left a dry spell and farmers thought the current rain was a blessing before it reversed gains when the season was way in to plant new crops,” Ogongo said.

He called on farmers to plant other fast growing crops like cassava, sweet potatoes and maize breeds to secure their yields this season.
