Ghati lauds Rongo DCC for banning tractors from hauling sugarcane at night to avert accidents

Nominated MP Dennitah Ghati has lauded the recent move by state to ban night time hauling of sugarcane by tractors.

In a press release, Ghati said Rongo DCC Andrew Mwiti band was in positive direction saying it was in a right direction and should be enforced.

Mwiti banned transporting of sugarcane from 6:30pm to 6:30am with any affected tractors instructed to park in public institutions at night instead of roads and centers to avert strike.

“This will definitely be a reprieve for the communities living in the sugar belt regions of Migori who have continously lost lives due to tractors parked at night,” she said.

She called on sugar millers in the region to adhere to the rule and challenged the Migori county assembly to enact a law to help enforce the ban.

“We also want the National Transport Safety Authority to officially put in place laws and measures to regulate the sector as most sugarcane hauling tractors are un-roadworthy,” she said.
