Migori governor Okoth Obado and the finance department officials went missing on Friday as casual workers held demos over five months unpaid salaries.

Migori County Government Workers Union representatives led demonstrations as about 1,200 casual workers demanded their five months salaries.

“We are sadden that today all county executives including top leadership have failed to address workers despite knowing we are yet to be paid for five months,” Sylvus Araja, Secretary General of the union said.

The workers started to demonstrate in Migori town and ended up at the county headquarters where they did not find any official from Migori governor Okoth Obado and the finance department.

“We will call on the county government and the finance department to allow a letter from county public service board which gave a green light for our payment to go through,” Araja said.

He said casual workers have been living in debts, with some having unpaid dues in hospitals because of the delay.

“The amount for casual workers salaries were placed in the budget, we want to know how our salaries have delayed for five months and where is the money,” the union treasurer Esther Kobimbo said.

The union cChairman Charles Opiyo said it was sad that people and staff have been in office for close to a decade and have failed to help workers.

“We addressed Rusana who was to be here but said officials will be in office on Monday, on that day by 8 am we will be here meanwhile all casual workers have stopped and down tools until we are paid,” Opiyo said.
