Bernard Otieno Ochieng from Homa Bay has become the first man in Nyanza to make a homemade car.

“We will be off, I drove it last from Ndhiwa to Homa Bay town which is over 5o kilometers and it did so smoothly, it will pick again,” he said when Migori News paid him a visit.

He warms the engine and drives the car around the compound comfortably before he sits down for an interview.

Ochieng who sat for his KCSE certificate at Andiwo Mixed Secondary School in 2010 and has never set foot in a engineering class as he dropped out of school because of lack of fees.

“I have never stepped into an engineering class, but I dream of joining a polytechnic and be employed in a car assembly and manufacturing plant since my interest started from a younger age when I modeled cars using clay,” he said.

He said he dreams of making car parts or gets inspiration from looking at cars and draws the parts in a book and his computer before he starts designing by drawing the parts down.

“I measure the wheels weight, distance and know where to place the engine and to design the body to prevent friction,” he said.

The vehicle is topless, and can sit two people comfortably.

He said he has been inventing smaller planes and vehicles for his children, with the small car costing him Sh80,000 to fabricate the body before he used a motorbike engine he revived from a scrap yard.

“With better resources I can make a bigger and better vehicle. I dream of getting the car to run on our roads by working with other assemblies in the country and internationally,” he said.
