Empowering women economically within their rural set ups can help in the fight against female genital mutilation among the Kuria Community, education stake holders say.
Led by Magdalene Majuma , the chief Executive Officer at ‘Msichaana empowerment’ an organizing that fights FGM in the region said , the government needs to device more approaches to ending the vice in the society.
Majuma noted that most women within the kuria community force young girls to face the knife and latter marry them off due to economic constraints.
The Anti Fgm crusader was speaking during the issuance of cheques to several women groups who have been in the fore front in advocating for education of girls in parts of the community where gender disparity is taking over .
Janet Robbie, children’s officer within Kuria west Sub county , said that majority of girls who escaped to recue camps are currently being cut at night as the circumcisers had adjusted their calendar.
Robbie added that they are working with the county government to come up with legislations that will help in the fight against retrogressive cultural practices .
Locals here believe that the nocturnal clandestine activities relating to fgm are pointers towards the full eradication of cultural practice.
