A non-government organisation has rolled out plan to connect at least 1000 schools in Kisumu, Homabay and Siaya with free internet for two years to boost e-learning.
Africa Higher Education Research Institute, (Aheri), in collaboration with Community Initiative Support Services (CISS) xecutive Directors and Barack Otieno and Dr Robert Owino said the move will boost learning in the region.
“We have already installed internet in 44 schools across Nyanza and we now intend to do about 1,000 more schools in the next two years,” Owino said.
“So far we have connected 11 schools in Siaya, Homabay and Kisumu to complement the state effort to boost digital literacy and to promote online reading and research among the beneficiary remote schools,” he added.
Otieno claimed that it was wrong that after independence illiteracy was still high and poverty, saying with the emergence of technology people must do things differently
But apart from the internet connections in schools, the IT experts also aim to create hotspots in active social centres and University, busy market places, college environments to enhance social networking and e-commerce.
