Government to test for mercury, copper on 4720 bags of sugar to Sukari Industries impounded

Rongo police impounded 9 trucks ferrying 4,720 bags of sugar to Sukari Industries after Migori county government enforcement officers grew suspicious at a road block.

The trucked branded with Menengai Soaps were being escorted by traders of Indian origin and armed administration police officers before they were stopped at  road block.

Diana Shem, an enforcement officer said the team told them they were transporting soap, but later agreed it was sugar and failed to produce any licence forcing them to place spikes on the road at about 615am.

“We had to call our bosses when they threatened to call other officers higher in the ranks,” Shem said.

Rongo sub-county commissioner Joseph Satia confirmed that the traders told police that the sugar was headed to Sukari Industries for sale a team from KRA, KEBS, anti-counterfeit unit and government laboratories arrived at the station.

“The team have taken samples from the sugar to check on traces of mercury and copper from them,” Satia said.

Rongo OCPD Jonathan Kisaka said the truck will not be released until investigations are complete despite a legal team from the industry seeking their release.
