Mourners were forced to scamper for safety after a family in Siruti village in Awendo Sub County fought over burial plans.
The family failed to agree over burial arrangements of a 13 year old girl forcing police to intervene and take the body back to mortuary.
The fight started after the deceased biological mother Evelyn Adhiambo was denied opportunity to take part in the burial arrangement.
The father Charles Obange and his other wife barred Adhiambo from taking part in the burial of her daughter on claims they had a divorce long before the girl passed on, enraging some family members.
“My husband and my co-wife refused to involve me in the burial arrangement of my daughter, I could not just stay away from my daughter’s burial,” Adhiambo explained.
Efforts to reach out to Obange for a comment bore no fruit as he refused to talk to the press.
A family member Oluoch Obange said family members had met earlier and instructed their kin to at least build a house of the deceased’s mother as accepted by law but he remained adamant.
“The decision he took to deny the other woman, whom he had culturally married, her rights despite not living together anymore was unfortunate. We will not entertain such skewed decision which will bring bad omen to the family,” Oluoch said.
Church members who were to preside over the funeral led by Bishop Julius Wasongo Okelo of Mowar Roho Israel were not spared either as they were assaulted and chased from the home.
“We are disappointed and ask the family to iron out their issued before the girl is buried. We will be back then,” Okello saoid.
Area Orpa Otieno said the family has agreed to solve the issues before the body will be brought back for burial.
