Migori County Assembly has approved a record Sh12.4 billion budget for the 2026/2027 financial year, marking the highest budget estimate ever recorded in the county since the advent of devolution.
Speaking during a press briefing , Migori County Assembly Speaker Christopher Odhiambo Rusana said the approved budget reflects the county growing resources base and commitment to acceleratimg development across the region.
Rusana noted that Sh9.1 billion of the budget will come from allocations from the National Treasury while the county is projected to raise Sh1.2 billion through its own-source revenue.
“For the first time Migori County is expected to generate Sh1.2 billion in own-source revenue. This is a significant milestone and demonstrates confidence in our revenue collection mechanisms,” he said.
The Speaker explained that the budget has been divided into recurrent and development expenditures.
He said that Sh8.6 billion has been allocated to recurrent expenditure which includes operational costs, working tools and equipment required for service delivery across county departments.
He added that Sh4.1 billion has been earmarked for development projects across Migori County, with the funds expected to support infrastructure improvement, public services and other priority programmes aimed at improving the livelihoods of residents.
He urged implementing departments to begin procurement processes early to avoid delays in project implementation, noting that the 2027 General Election could affect timelines if preparations are not made in advance.
“We need procurement processes to start in good time so that projects can be implemented within the set timelines and residents can benefit from the allocated funds,” he said.
The Speaker also acknowledged oversight committees for their role in monitoring budget implementation and called on county departments to fast-track execution of planned projects to ensure the budget achieves its intended objectives.
At the same time, Rusana appealed for increased funding to the County Assembly to strengthen its legislative and oversight functions, saying additional resources would enhance service delivery and accountability within the county government.
