Tensions are escalating during this political period as politicians resort to hate speech as a weapon against each other.

Recently, we have witnessed our president William Ruto engaging in verbal attacks with his opposition, Rigathi Gachagua, exposing their shortcomings and weakness to the public.

However, this worsened further when he attacked a defenseless and peaceful man, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, criticizing his eating habits and weight. An action condemned by many including other leaders and the public.

President William Ruto is a leader, an example set for the younger generation; therefore, involving himself in verbal abuse is undignified.

People expected him to have reacted differently and more maturely not because he does not get angry when attacked, but because he knows better than to engage.

Fighting back with Rigathi Gachagua only satisfies his opponent’s ego and fulfills his expectations. However, silence or a positive reaction will not only disappoint them but also undermine their determination.

Being a leader means that opposition will always be there, but it should not be a reason for one to lose focus on their primary goal.

The opposition keeps leaders in check ensuring they do not abuse power for their personal gains. Their presence will test a leader’s patience, resilience, and their assertiveness in the decisions that they make.

They hold leaders accountable for their actions and demand explanations on some unclear matters. Therefore, both the leaders and the opposition can co-exist peacefully.

Leaders in government and those in the opposition should exhibit leadership qualities and professionalism especially when addressing issues that impact people’s well-being.

Trading insults with each other will promote division among citizens and erode trust in leadership thus affecting national unity and stability.

Smear campaigns promote a culture of insults over substance therefore distracting the nation from addressing pressing issues. The energy channelled into personal attacks should instead be directed toward building the nation.

In order to grow as a nation, peace is a paramount factor. However, peace cannot exist where there is disrespect and lawlessness in the nation. Our leaders need to respect each other irrespective of their positions.

Even when addressing grievances they should do so in a respectful way. President William Ruto is the Head of state and we ought to respect the authority that he carries. He should be accorded the respect he deserves.

He on the other hand should avoid offensive speech with his opposition as it lowers his dignity and automatically provides a loophole for disrespect
