The queer community in Kenya has strongly criticized the government’s discriminatory policies towards LGBTQ Individuals.
In reaction, they are contesting these policies, pushing for equal rights and protections for everyone, irrespective of their sexual orientation.
This effort aims to raise awareness and advocate for legal changes to create a safer environment for LGBTQ individuals in the country.Stigma, violence, and discrimination against LGBTQ individuals have significantly hindered their inclusion in society and restrict their access to vital services.
While progress has been made in advancing rights, widespread homophobic and transphobic attitudes, often supported by punitive laws and inadequate legal protections, continue to expose many LGBTI people in Kenya to serious human rights violations. It is essential to tackle these issues to promote equality and ensure that everyone can live freely and safely.
One queer individual noted more often than not he has encountered discrimination, both within and outside the LGBTQ+ community, from assumptions of being promiscuous, claims of being unable to commit to a partner, to questioning the validity of it all.
Such attitudes have not only undermined his self-esteem but also hindered the ability to come out and live openly, frequently misunderstood or dismissed as a phase.
Many LGBTQ+ victims of violence feel they have no options, believing the police may persecute them rather than provide protection. LGBTQ+ individual have reported that the police arbitrarily arrest alleged gay men which has significantly eroded the already limited trust in local authorities.
Sentiments from Individual of the LGBTQ+ Community have called upon the government to hold Law enforcement officials accountable of abuses and discrimination against LGBT people (including by dropping charges against the men arrested), and should ensure that LGBT people are free to file complaints against both law enforcement officials and ordinary citizens without fear of retribution.
As the conversation draws to a close, Mokeira(Name changed) voice brims with hope and determination.‘I take pride in the progress we’ve made,’ they assert, their gaze reflecting the resilience of their community.
From the streets of Nyamache to the halls of the Bosongo Health Facility, Mokeira’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of empathy and advocacy.

Indeed that’s a big blow so painful RIp
