An attempt by a teenager from Migori county to sell a family cow without consent turned tragic when he committed suicide.

The boy aged 17 years chose to commit suicide after his attempt to sell the cow at a cattle auction at Mawini village failed.

Nyamaharaga sub location Assistant chief Rose Ooko said traders at the market were alarmed that the young boy wanted to sell the cow without an adult.

“He was told to go bring the national identification card of the father, which is a requirement when an animal is sold,” Ooko said.

But when he delayed to return for hours, his body was found hanging from a rope inside a bush.

“He had a buyer, but when he was blocked he asked the cattle auction management that he was going to get an ID,” she added.

She said they are investigating if the boy had the consent of the family to sell the cow or was afraid of repercussion from the parents.

The body of the deceased is preserved at Migori County Level Four Hospital mortuary pending autopsy and police investigations.
