Macalder MCA skips governor Ayacko function amid tension over gold mining revenue

Macalder Kanyarwanda MCA Felix Okwanyo on Wednesday skipped a function by governor Ochillo Ayacko after threatening to attend.

On Wednesday Ayacko and several dignitaries opened Mariba dispensary in the ward as Okwanyo missed it completely.

Days to the opening of the facility, Okwanyo took to social media and cautioned Nyatike MP Tom Odege and Roads Executive John Oring’o, who hails from the same ward, that he was to attend.

But on Wednesday immediate former MCA and ex-speaker George Duro and colleagues Calvince Seko of Got Kachola and Masaba’s Clarkson Mwita graced the occasion.

“I only saw him on social media when he threatened to attack Odege at this function, the legislator has his mandate which is far from other elected leaders,” Ayacko said.

Odege did not grace the occasion.

“I am praying for him and won’t attack him in public, but if you see him tell him we will streamline the gold sector especially on revenue allocation to wananchi,” Ayacko said.

He said from next week, he will visit the old macalder mines which is rich in gold and copper and told the MCA to ensure he follows the legal route for management of mines.

Okwanyo is the chairman of Macalder Copper Hills Sacco which entered into agreement with a local investor.

In past weeks the investor, where Okwanyo is also a director, accused Okwanyo of picking Sh5m from a rival to replace them.

“I will go there as I have the authority and power and I will ensure artisanal miners get their rights,” he said.

Got Kachola MCA Calvince Ocholla said it was fruitless to antagonise the governor from Nyatike arwa.

Ocholla said Ayacko has ensured development and employment opportunities are sorted in Nyatike.

“We have people who only come to Nyatike as nephews during elections, we will not leave Ayacko for governor,” Ocholla said.

George Duro said Mariba Dispensary was started after an expectant woman died because the nearest health facility was in Nyandema, Ong’er and Otho.

“We started this dispensary and it stalled, we will always be happy to Ayacko for finishing this and other dispensaries,” he said.

Leaders said they will ensure a borehole is drilled at the facility next week to help patients and locals.
