Kaler MCA Thomas Akungo has been elected as acting Migori speaker a week after tabling an impeachment motion against speaker Owino Likowa.
Akugo, serving for a second term was elected on Tuesday unanimously.
ODM Majority Party whip and Muhuru Bay MCA Lawrence Magubo said the independent ticket elected member will take over after Bukira Central MCA Mathews Chacha who is the Deputy Speaker step aside.
“Chacha said he could not take over from Likowa because of active court cases,” Magubo said.
The cases revolve around the beleaguered assembly service board which he is part of.
Akungo will also be the chairman of the board, position held by Likowa.
In new changes, Majority Leader and South Sakwa MCA Ken Ouma was removed from the assembly board and replaced with nominated MCA Elizabeth Ochaye.
“We took these measures to ensure that the assembly continues to function,” Magubo said.
Akungo said just because he tabled the motion to kick out Likowa did not mean he wished to be take over the same seat, but his colleagues picking him “was just mere coincidence.”
“Last week the all members except one unanimously chose to impeach the speaker, until yesterday we had Chacha acting as speaker until he choose to step down,” Akungo said.
