Angry Oyani Maasai residents in Migori county have accused Kenya Police officers of laxity as a known gunman is roaming free despite calls for arrests.
Residents said their attempts to seek three suspects, captured on CCTV camera at businessman Peter Okello’s home where three shots were fired and one person injured apprehended.
On July 1, an altercation between Okello and three cousins turned tragic on one of them pulled a rifle and fired twice at Okello and several people, with one bullet hitting Okello’s younger brother Okello Ogejo on thigh.
He is still recuperating at Migori Referral Hospital.
“We have a big problem and tension is high in the area because we are living with a known gunman who was briefly arrested at Oyani Maasai police station and left,” Caleb Okello, a villager said.
He said what started as a normal altercation over access road turned tragic when one of the suspect who was covering himself with a maasai suka, removed the rifle and fired thrice.
“It was tragic, while we were taking cover a bullet hit one of us in the thighs and the suspects walked away,” Caleb said.
He said attempt to seek redress at the Oyani Maasai police station in Uriri sub-county bore on fruits as the suspect was left on a Sh5,000 police bond and went back home.
The incident was reported at the station on OB number 5 of July 03, 2025 at 0730hrs.
“We have sought redress at the sub-county and county security officers and nothing has come up, this is not the first time despite having CCTV footages,” Caleb said.
Angry members of the public accusing police of laxity or of hiring out their gun to cause the attack moved into the suspect’s house and set it on fire.
Obillo Okello, a former councilor said Oyani area borders Migori and Narok county which is volatile for cases of insecurity and they live in fear.
“We call on police officers and the ministry of interior to come to our aid, we cant live in the same area where we know a gunman who is walking free,” he said.
“We can’t be told an incident is under investigations and we have a gunman roaming free, we don’t have guns and we are helpless we want protection from police,” Obillo said.
Peter Okello, the businessman affected in the melee said he is afraid of more fatal confrontation as the incident happened in broad day light showing how confident the assailants.
“Currently Kenyans don’t have faith in our police officers and personally I feel the same way. I wish inspector general of police and the ministry of interior affairs come in and help us,” he said.
