Migori county teachers have admonished the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) national secretary general Akello Misori for calling off a national strike.

On Monday, Akello told Kuppet teachers that a decision by the union’s National Executive Board (NEB) has decided to call off the strike.

Migori county secretary general Orwa Jasolo told reporters in Migori town on Wednesday that the decision was in bad faith.

Jasolo said to call off the strike what Akello and NEB did was “a betrayal, an affront to the collective resolve of teachers across the nation.”

“This decision is a slap in the face of the thousands of educators who, in good faith, took to the streets to demand what is rightfully theirs,” he added.

He said as members of the National Governing Council (NGC) on Sunday they had a meeting in Nairobi where they reaffirmed the continuation of the strike.

“While some teachers were still on the streets on Monday and we were piling pressure we got the news, we first thought it was fake news,” Jasolo said.

He said Akello Misori will have to explain to Kenyan teachers on what he achieved by calling off the strike.

“We had issues of career progression and confirmation of Junior Secondary School teachers which were not done, we will never forgive this betrayal,” he added.

He said Akello and NEB will have to explain first to teachers on their decision and bring the agenda to the NGC.

“They have killed the trust of teachers,” he said.
