Masara School from Migori county choose a special way to motivate candidates for forthcoming national examinations by flying one to Nairobi.

The school principal Dan Aloka told Nyanza News that they decided to book a plane for Thomas Wilson Andrew the best candidate in first term who scored a B+ alongside his class principal Hillary Mwale.

The two were booked in an airplane from Migori Airstrip and less than 40 minutes they were at Wilson Airport in Nairobi City before booking a Bolt Taxi to The University of Nairobi, Chiromo Campus where medicine school is situated.

“Last year we had promised the best candidate a special surprise and we fulfilled the promise, the best candidate said he dreams of being a doctor and join the University of Nairobi so we flew him there,” Aloka said.

He said before boarding the plane, Andrew was escorted by his classmates who felt part of the motivation.

“There he met professors, went to lecture and labs and interacted with students which motivated him, the experience has also inspired the entire school,” Aloka said.

He said in the past other schools choose to go to better schools which have more infrastructure which end up intimidating students more.

“Schools in rural areas lack motivation for students because most have never gone to big cities, seen universities or interact closely with professionals they aspire to be in the future. We managed to cover this,” Aloka said.

He said for the ended second term they will fly to Nairobi three students: best boy, best girl and the most improved as they aspire to perform better in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

He also promised that any student who scores a A plain or A minus in the exams will be flown to university as long as there is an airport to it.

Andrew said he had never boarded a plane to been to Nairobi in his life and the experience will be etched in his memory for life.

After sitting for his primary school education, Andrew was called to Kokuro Secondary but because of fees constraints he went to the mixed school next to their home.

“I was not discouraged and this school has offered me best chance to reach my ambition, Masara is the golden school and teachers have ensured our learning environment is surreal,” he said.

Mwale said the trip has motivated the candidates and the entire school.
