ANALYSIS: Kisumu DG Owili, Nyong’o Shadow and his next governor dreams to pipe Oron, Ojienda and Aduma

BY KEPHER OTIENO

In a surprising twist in Kisumu’s political landscape, Dr. Mathews Owilli, the Deputy Governor who has been a steadfast ally of Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, is now eyeing the top job himself.

Known for his quiet but effective leadership, Owili has been an integral part of the county’s administration, helping drive numerous projects under the banner of “TICH TIRE,” which translates to “work is ongoing.”

Dr. Owili’s decision to run for governor reflects both his confidence in the county’s progress and his desire to continue the work begun under Nyong’o’s leadership.

His tenure as Deputy Governor has been marked by a series of achievements, including significant improvements in healthcare, infrastructure, and education.

“I am in the race and will only stop at the ballot in 2027 General Elections,’’ he said

Owili’s ambitions has been a topic of speculation among political circles, due to the recent developments that has brought him and other aspirants into sharper focus.

After his boss, Prof. Nyong’o, was promoted to Chair of the Central Management Committee of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party—a role that many see as the de facto party leader—Owili’s path to the governor’s seat has become even more prominent.

Owili’s path to the governor’s seat has become even more prominent as Nyong’os loyal deputy for the last seven years they have worked together without factions or fracas.

Nyong’o’s new position has elevated him to a national stage, leaving a significant leadership void at the county level in Kisumu, especially in the political circles.

This shift has provided Owili with a unique opportunity to assert his candidacy for governor as Nyong’o takes on broader responsibilities within ODM.

Owili is now positioning himself as the logical successor to continue the work that has earned Kisumu accolades for its progressive governance.

The deputy governor’s move to seek the top job in the county is seen as a strategic response to the changing political dynamics in the lakeside county.

With Nyong’o’s increased focus on national politics, Owili is now in a prime position to capitalize on his extensive experience and the trust he has built over the years.

His supporters argue that his deep involvement in the county’s successes and his clear understanding of the local issues make him well suited to step into the governor’s role.

As Owili begins early campaigns, he laid firm commitment to maintaining the stability and progress of Kisumu, building on the achievements of the Nyong’o administration.

Political analysts say his candidacy will be closely watched as he seeks to balance the legacy of his predecessor with his vision for the future of the county.

“In a political landscape where continuity and change are often at odds, Dr. Owilli’s bid represents a significant moment for Kisumu,’’ said a political scientist Tom Mboya.

The coming months will reveal whether his leadership style and vision can secure the support needed to succeed Nyong’o and carry forward the transformative agenda of the “TICH TIRE” administration.

Observers note that his growing influence and strategic vision have positioned him as a formidable candidate for the governor’s seat, although he faces a stiff competition.

Owili faces a formidable competition from Kisumu central MP Dr Joshua Oron, Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor and Kisumu Senator Prof Tom Ojienda.

They, too, have hit an early campaign trail and vow to win the seat. Oron has been moving round tirelessly mobilizing for grassroots support just like Owuor.

The competition is heating up with prominent figures such as Oron, Owuor, and Senator Prof. Ojienda who have thrown their hats into the ring to intensify early vote hunting.

Each of these candidates is actively campaigning and pledging to secure the governor’s seat by any means necessary.

The deputy governor’s potential candidacy has generated a mix of reactions.

Supporters view him as a natural successor who can build on the strong foundation laid by Nyong’o.

As the 2027 election season approaches, Dr. Owilli’s campaign is likely to focus on continuity and progress.

Critics, however, question whether he can navigate the political challenges and maintain the harmonious governance that has characterized the Nyong’o-Owili administration.

Oron, known for his tireless grassroots mobilization, has been crisscrossing Kisumu Central, Nyando and Muhoroni villages, galvanizing support from local communities.

His campaign is marked by a vigorous outreach strategy, aiming to build a strong network of supporters from the ground up.

Dr Oron’s approach reflects a deep understanding of the local political landscape and a commitment to engaging directly with voters.

Similarly, Owuor from Nyakach is also on the campaign trail, focusing on grassroots support and community engagement.

“We are no push over. Will teach him a lesson,’’ said Mr Owuor.

His strategy involves connecting with voters through local events and dialogues, aiming to highlight his vision for Kisumu’s future and his record of service in Nyakach.

Senator Prof Ojienda, a well-respected academic and politician, is bringing a different dimension to the race.

“Take it to the bank, only Professors will succeed professor. A cohort can only replace a cohort and no lesser equal. Forget those Doctors and Misters,’’ Ojienda argued.

His campaign is characterized by a strong emphasis on policy and governance, leveraging his academic background and experience in the Senate to present himself as a candidate with a well-defined plan for Kisumu’s development.

With each candidate vying for the governor’s seat, the political landscape in Kisumu is becoming increasingly dynamic.

Mboya explained that Owili’s campaign would need to navigate this competitive environment carefully, differentiating his vision from those of his rivals while capitalizing on his experience and the achievements of the Nyong’o administration.

As the next general election cycle approaches, the contest for Kisumu’s governorship promises to be a closely watched and highly competitive race.

Voters will be evaluating each candidate’s platform, record of accomplishment, and vision for the county’s future, making this one of the most intriguing political backgrounds.
