European Union has offered Migori county Sh72million to reduce high rate of malnutrition which has led to the high child and maternal mortality rate in the county.
Western Kenya region EU Director, Titus Katembu, the stunting level of children which is an impetus of malnutrition in Migori county stands at 26.4 percent, a level higher than the national rate which is stands at 26 percent.
Katembu who was speaking during the launch of Malnutrition campaign in Migori said the rate of malnutrition in the county County is unacceptable and it must be dealt with as quickly as possible.
Katembu said tackling malnutrition does not just involves giving food, but giving food with the required nutritional values.
Annarita Spagnola of the We world Organization said that the issue of malnutrition in Migori county cannot only be tackled through a multi sectoral approach involving both the health and the Agricultural sectors.
She therefore called on the county government to help in the drafting of the Nutrition Action Plan which shall be rolled down to women and children
He noted that the most governments, Migori included has poorly funded nutrition related programs and he therefore challenged the government to increase the funding into the same.
However the Migori county director of health Joel Gondi said 45 percent of children’s death in the region is as a result of malnutrition saying that any government cannot avoid matters of nutrition.
He said the county government will support this program to the fullest so it can benefit the people of Migori County.
