How Deputy President Gachagua amassed Sh5.2bn in two years, funded Gen Z demos- IMPEACHMENT

Embattled Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua amassed Sh5.2billion within two years and acquired several expensive properties.

Kibwezi MP Mutuse Mwengi tabled the impeachment motion against Gachagua in the national assembly on Tuesday on highlighted how the deputy president and his family amassed the wealth.

The details are contained on the seventh ground he sought to impeach Gachagua.

“”For the past two years, His Excellency Rigathi Gachagu has inexplicably amssed a humongous property protofolio esdtimated to be Sh5.2billion,” the impeachment said.

He said this was against Gachagua’s known salary of Sh12million per year, believing the second in command had been involved to massively launder money, conceal proceeds of crime, corruption, and benefit from influence peddling.

He accused the second family of siphoning the amount through billions in renovation of DP residences in Nairobi and Mombasa, abd Sh3,7billion buying of mosquito nets.

“In essence, His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua has chosen personal comfort, extreme luxury, and pomposity at the expense of service delivery to the people,” the motion said.

He said Gachagua “using his spouse, two sons Kevin Rigathi Gachagua and Keith Ikinu Rigathi and other close family members and associates,” were running a total of 22 companies to siphon the amount.

The impeachment motion said that from the companies the second family acquired the following prime properties:

  1. Outspan Hotel from Aberdare Safari Hotels in Nyeri for Sh535m in November 2023
  2. Treetops Hotel in Nyeri
  3. Olive Gardens Hotel in Nairobi
  4. Queens Gate Serviced Apartments in Nairobi
  5. Vipingo Beach Resort in Kilifi County
  6. Land in Mathira East Constituency, where he has constructed a helicopter landing facility
  7. 40 acres of land in Kakuret in Kamburaini in Nyeri County.
  8. 80 acres of land in Meru County.
  9. Acquired dairy farm in Nyandarua County
  10. Influenced and connived with unscrupulous Ministry of Lands officials to issue allotment letter to Wamunyoro Investment company to acquire L.R 2009 and LR 90923 at Embakasi in Nairobi. The company used the fraudulently acquired documents to support a court case at the expense of the legitimate owner of the property.

“Moreover, companies associated with His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua and his proxies were involved in the 2023 (demos) that put the lives of millions of Kenyans at risk,” the motion added.

The motion has also singled out three companies and their directors for being used as proxies complete with dates huge chunks of money was withdrawn and transacted by signatories.

The companies area Agribriq Investment Limited (PVT-RXUP6E) with Rudani Mayurkumar Mahendrabhai and Patel Ankitkumar Hasmukhbhai as directors,  Lusona Events Limited (CPR/2012/87037) with Esther Wanjiru Njenga and Cecilia Muthoni Njenga as directors and St. Nicholas Rehabilitation and Industrial Training Institute Limited (PVT-AAACMO4) with sole company director  Nicholas Mugambi Maingi.

“The payment scheme used typifies money laundering transactions. It is patently clear that there are serious reasons to believe that His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua, the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, using his state office has committed gross economic crimes, namely conflict of interest, abuse of office, conspiracy to commit a crime, under and offences of money laundering,” the motion added.
