The teachers in Homa Bay County have issued a notice to parents, advising them to keep their children at home at the start of the upcoming school term.
This decision comes as teachers plan to withhold their services until the government meets their demands.
According to Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Patrick Were and Ndhiwa branch official Cornel Ojuok, the teachers are resolute in their stance and will not attend to students unless the government addresses their concerns.
Were said that the teachers’ grievances have been ignored for too long, and they will no longer tolerate the lack of action from the government. He emphasized that the strike is a last resort after numerous attempts to engage with the authorities have failed.
He added that the demands are not only about better pay but also about improving working conditions and ensuring that the education sector is properly funded to enhance the quality of education.
Were expressed disappointment in the government’s reluctance to address these critical issues.
Ojuok said that the teachers in Ndhiwa are fully united and ready to support the strike until their demands are met.
He pointed out that the government’s neglect has left them with no choice but to take this drastic measure. He insisted that this strike is not just for the benefit of the teachers but also for the students, as a well-funded and supported education system is crucial for the future of the country.
Ojuok called on parents and other stakeholders to support the teachers in their quest for justice. Ends
