Two Migori women politicians allied to President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have elaborate plans to empower county women ahead of 2027 general elections.

Former journalist Bevin Bhoke and her counterpart Betty Oranga plan to revive over 150 women groups across Migori’s eight constituencies under Saccos.

Bhoke plans to vie for Migori fourth Woman Representative seat which is currently being held by independent candidate Fatuma Mohammed.

Oranga on the other hands will try to unseat Suna East MP and minority leader Junet Mohammed in next general elections.

Speaking to Nyanza News in Migori town, the two said they plan to move ahead and rejuvenate the group’s left by former Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo who was the patron.

A total of eight Saccos in each constituency was formed in which formed as an umbrella for groups to have funds for revolving loans and a platform for savings and loaning services for members.

“These groups were to be managed professionally and have members get a joint effort to have funds, grants and seed money for their businesses,” Bhoke said.

The two said the main aim is to empower women in Migori.

“Under Owalo we had this bottom-up approach to making development agenda to reach mama mboga and village women, this was our manifesto in UDA which will not die under our watch,” Bhoke added.

Already the two politicians have already contacted stakeholders, partners, banking institutions and professionals.

“Our first agenda will be to train leaders on sound management of funds and projects aligned out before a roll out,” Bhoke said.

Oranga said they will also have benchmarking and learn from other groups in Kenya.

“Migori has never seen such agenda from both female and male elected leaders to specifically target women, we had it in Homa Bay under former Woman Representative and we will do the same in Migori,” Oranga said.

Oranga said during last general elections where she vied as Suna Central MCA and Bhoke as Woman Representative they campaigned on the promise of empowering women.

“We will have a platform where we xan empower our own women to be able to save their own money and developed,” Oranga said.

The project plans to reverse the high poverty index in Migori.
