One Vision Kenya, a local non-government organization has distributed over 19,000 tree seedlings across five wards in the county.

The organization in conjunction with Arbor Day Foundation first targeted over 300 families with 3,500 free fruit tree seedlings of magoes and hass avacadoes to capitalize with the ongoing long rains.

In the same wards, 15 primary and secondary schools have been mapped out and will be given more than 15,000 tree seedlings for timber use to be plated.

Victor Ogindo, the Deputy Director at One Vision told Migori News the move is set to mitigate against negative effects of Climate Change and improve tree cover.

Ogindo said they picked fruit trees to help bring in women, who are most affected by negative effects of climate change to be part of conserving the environment.

“In most homes decision on what to plant and which portion of land to be allocated if left for men, that is why most tree planting works on more timber varaiety like eucalyptus,” he said.

He said by planting fruit trees, families will be able to conserve environment, boost forest cover while benefitting from nutrition and getting income.

“Women will make more sense on climate change and planting of trees if it involves nutrition to their families and a means of getting sales out of fruits,” Ogindo said.

Maurice Shikuku, a farmer from South Kanyamkago ward in Uriri constituency said they have formed a cluster of farmers groups to help in ensuring planted trees reach maturity.

“We first identified farmers who had plot for the trees and have a cluster to ensure progress is mapped because in the next three years they will form groups for value addition,” he said.
