Delays by Migori county government to finish a multi-million market in Migori town have seen tension with fish mongers leading demonstrations.
The traders said a plan to move them from the entrance of Migori bus-park over congestion and security concern was a discrimination after delays to finish Sh114m world bank funded market upgrade.
Jackline Auma is a fishmonger said they will not move from the area and wanted governor Ochillo Ayacko to offer them an alternative site.
“We are the only ones being told to move yet there are other traders selling here. We feel that this is discriminative and unfair,” Auma said.
“Migori has no market as it is still under construction. Until that construction has been completed then we shall move in the market,” Julius Odero who is a fish monger said.
Ayacko who visited the market in September last year noted that the Sh144 million market which is under World Bank funding would be complete in less than 18 months.
Officials from the department who talked to the traders said the presence of the fish traders at the bus stage caused congestion as they were ‘causing jam and traffic at the area because it is a busy place through which vehicles exit’.
