Seven inmates escaped while three police officers got injured in a grisly road accident at Kokuro along Migori-Kisii highway when the suspects were being ferried from Rongo to Migori prisons.
The 3.30pm incident that involved a police vehicle
and a mini bus occurred as a result of overtaking by at a placed marked a black spot left a total of 14 injured while the police driver having leg fractures.
According to the county police commandant David Kirui, the police vehicle that was carrying suspects from Rongo to Migori prisons to be remanded collided head on with the minibus as it tried to overtake another vehicle at the Kokuro narrow strip.
“The accident occurred at Kokuro where the police driver was trying to overtake another car and collided head on leaving 14 people that included the three police officers and made the suspects escape to unknown place with injuries,” he said.
The suspects were being ferried when the accident occurred at the black spot as the police vehicle failed to control the police car as it was overtaking the car ahead of it.
“It’s believed that the suspects who suffered slight injuries took advantage of the accident and varnished to the near sugarcane plantations for their safety,” he added.
The police officers and the injured passengers .have been admitted at the Migori Level 4 Referral Hospital as the police have now launched a manhunt for the seven inmates to bring them back for justice to prevail.
Both vehicles were taken to Awendo police station awaiting clearance and inspections to ascertain the real cause of the
accident.
