Muhuru Bay MCA Hevron Maira led fishmongers in Migori county to protested what they termed harassment and exploitation from revenue officers.

Maira said fishermen, traders and lorry drivers have endured a lot of pain and suffering in the hands of security officers from Kenya and also sometimes Uganda and Tanzania at the lake.

“The situation has been made worse by Kenya Revenue Authrotiy officers and police and we need peace and tranquility in business,” he said.

He said traders had to be taxed twice or multiple times to transfer their sardines from Migori to Nairobi/

According to Jack Kisanko, a trader and fisherman , the revenue officers intercept the traders at various toll stations and impose hefty penalties on them failure to which they tow the vehicles to the nearest police station.

Kisanko explained that they usually part with as high as Sh80,000 to be freed from the shackles of impunity in the police stations.

Efforts to reach the revenue officers bore no fruits as they said they are not authorised to speak until their bosses allow them.
