Amref Kenya has kicked off the Power for Youths program in Migori county that will empower youths for the next five years ahead of 2022 general elections.
Charles Olwamba, the Social Accountability and Governance officer at Amref Kenya said the program will be rolled out in partnership with Ujamaa Africa.
“The main aspect of the group will be to empower youths in decision making process to avoid cases which have started to be reported of youths being involved in clashes,” Olwamba said.
Other aspects of the program will be sexual and gender based violence, child rights, harmful practices like Female Genital Mutilation and control of unintended pregnancies.
“It is sad that in most cases of violence in politics youths are always the victims and end up being used by politicians to end up being arrested and arraigned in court,” Olwamba said.
He said they will work with mass media, youth groups and community based organisations at grass root level to push the program through.
“We want after five years of the program that they want to have sustainable agenda for youths,” he said.
Joseph Nyapete, the Migori County Youth Forum president lauded the project which he said will help in shaping policies that will put leaders and politicians to task.
