The Ng’eyo Ngima Support Group in Awendo sub-county has come out to help widows living with HIV to end stigma.
Started in 2017 with only six women, the group has grown to 30 members with the director Rose Ashley said they began after realizing most women who were affected by the virus were suffering from stigma especially after the death of their husbands.
“Most are shunned by their families and used to find it hard to pick their anti-retrovial drugs from hospitals, we formed the support group for them to encourage each other,” Ashely said.
She said the group offered a support group which encouraged and counseled each other and encourage hospital visit in case of any opportunistic diseases found.
She said they started with a merry-go-round and went ahead to ensure all members were registered under the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) for ease of medicine.
“We also have kitchen gardens and encourage fruit and chicken farming to not only boost our income, but also to improve the family nutrition,” Mary dek, a member said.
