Nyatike MP Tom Odege has said he will push through for government to construct two dams and more dykes in the constituency to curb cases of perennial flooding.

He said apart from backflow of water from LAke Victoria and rivers Migori and Kuja often breaking their banks during long rains, flooding has also been affected by surface runoff from Lambwe Valley in nearby Homa Bay county.

“There is dire need for construction of dykes and two dams one in the side of Homa Bay and another in Migori county which will not only stop flooding, but help in irrigating the area which also suffers from floods,” Odege said.

Odege said he will push through the talks by leaders from both Migori and Homa Bay counties to push the national treasury.

He said in the past, the national government built a dyke on one side of River Kuja which “has not helped much since flood waters are still directed in the other side.”

“The dykes and two dams were to be done through the National Irrigation Board but this has not been possible due to limited funding, we will push through for more funds,” he said.

Seven schools among them being five primary schools have been affected by the floods and 837 households with most of them being in central Kadem according to the statistics given by the area DCC madam
